Belém do Pará sits at the edge of the Amazon, where river and bay meet in a landscape with activity and color. The Ver-o-Peso Market spreads along Guajará Bay, welcoming early morning boats laden with fresh fish, herbs, fruits, and Amazonian goods. Recognized by UNESCO as a Creative City of Gastronomy, the local cuisine marries Indigenous, Portuguese, and African traditions to create dishes found nowhere else. Here, açaí is served thick and savory, often alongside fried fish. Maniçoba, a mix of slow-cooked manioc leaves and meats, takes days to prepare and reflects a respect for ingredients and technique that is part of the region’s heritage.

Belém also offers leafy escapes right in the heart of the city. Mangal das Garças brings tropical birds, gardens, and quiet pathways down by the river, while the Bosque Rodrigues Alves Botanical Park preserves hundreds of native plant species, creating a leafy oasis in this tropical city. For a taste of local life beyond the urban center, a quick boat ride brings visitors to islands like Combú or Marajó, where riverfront restaurants, chocolate makers and gentle river views offer a relaxed contrast to the bustle of Belém’s markets.
