Lake Issyk is a mountain lake in southeastern Kazakhstan, located in a gorge of the Trans-Ili Alatau about 60 kilometers east of Almaty. The lake lies at roughly 1,800 meters above sea level within the Ile-Alatau National Park and is surrounded by steep rocky slopes, coniferous forests, and alpine meadows. Its setting provides a marked contrast with the dry foothills and plains farther north. The lake has also given its name to the nearby town of Issyk, making it an important natural landmark for the surrounding area and a popular destination for recreation in the mountains.

Lake Issyk's landscape has been shaped by powerful geological forces. The original lake basin formed when a major mountain landslide created a natural dam across the valley. The lake later experienced a catastrophic flood after the natural barrier was breached, changing its size and surrounding landscape. Today, the lake and its gorge form part of the protected environment of Ile-Alatau National Park. The surrounding area is also connected with the wider cultural landscape of southeastern Kazakhstan, where mountain valleys, seasonal pastures, and routes between the foothills and highlands have long been important to local communities.

The lake is surrounded by rocky gorges, spruce forests, and alpine vegetation, with the Trans-Ili Alatau rising above the valley. Hiking routes provide access to viewpoints and surrounding mountain terrain, while the lakeshore offers places for walking, picnicking, and observing the changing landscape. The water can appear blue, turquoise, green, or gray depending on weather and light. Ile-Alatau National Park protects a much larger mountain ecosystem around the lake, including forests, alpine meadows, glaciers, rivers, and high peaks. Wildlife in the park includes mountain species adapted to the varied elevations of the Trans-Ili Alatau.

Food around Lake Issyk reflects the broader traditions of southeastern Kazakhstan, with beshbarmak, baursaks, dairy products, and horse-meat specialties commonly associated with local cuisine. The nearby town of Issyk also lies within an important agricultural and wine-producing area, where vineyards and orchards benefit from the mountain climate. One distinctive feature of the lake is the contrast between its relatively small size and the dramatic geological history of its valley. The surrounding forested slopes and open alpine terrain also illustrate the range of landscapes protected within Ile-Alatau National Park, making Lake Issyk one of the more accessible mountain destinations near Almaty.
