Santa Margarita is a small community in San Luis Obispo County, set among rolling hills and oak-covered countryside near the southern edge of the Santa Lucia Mountains. Located along the historic El Camino Real corridor, it has a rural character shaped by ranching, agriculture, and its position between the Salinas Valley and the Central Coast. The town sits near Santa Margarita Lake and is surrounded by open grasslands, vineyards, and wooded hills. Its compact center includes locally owned businesses and historic buildings, while the surrounding landscape provides a quieter contrast to larger communities in the county.

Santa Margarita's history is closely connected with the Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa and the ranching settlements that developed around the mission's agricultural lands. The community grew as a stopping point along routes connecting San Luis Obispo with the interior valleys and became associated with cattle ranching and farming. The Santa Margarita Ranch remains an important part of the area's identity and landscape. Local heritage is also reflected in the historic Santa Margarita de Cortona Catholic Church and the old commercial buildings around town, which provide reminders of the community's rural past.

Outdoor attractions are concentrated around Santa Margarita Lake, a reservoir surrounded by oak woodland, grassy hills, and seasonal creeks. The lake supports boating, fishing, camping, picnicking, and hiking, with trails and recreation areas extending through the surrounding landscape. Nearby, the Carrizo Plain and coastal mountain country provide access to some of Central California's more remote open spaces. Within town, the Santa Margarita Ranch and surrounding agricultural lands contribute to the area's rural scenery. The community also lies close to wineries and vineyards associated with the Paso Robles and San Luis Obispo wine regions.

Food and drink in Santa Margarita reflect the agricultural character of the surrounding county. Local establishments serve ranch-style breakfasts, burgers, sandwiches, Mexican dishes, and other casual foods, while nearby vineyards and tasting rooms highlight Central Coast wines. The area is also known for Santa Margarita Ranch, a large working ranch with agricultural operations and historic buildings. A distinctive feature of the community is its location at the meeting point of several landscapes: oak woodland, inland grasslands, vineyards, and the nearby coastal mountains. This setting gives Santa Margarita a strong connection to the farming and ranching traditions of San Luis Obispo County.
