Cayo Santa María is a small island off the north coast of Cuba, part of the Jardines del Rey archipelago in Villa Clara Province. It is connected to the mainland by a causeway crossing the shallow waters of the Bahía de Buenavista. The island is known for white-sand beaches, clear Caribbean water, coastal lagoons, mangroves, and low limestone terrain. Much of the developed area is concentrated around beachfront resorts, while natural habitats remain protected in other sections. Its location within the Buenavista region gives Cayo Santa María an important role in Cuba’s northern coastal tourism landscape.

The surrounding region has a long connection with fishing, seafaring, and small coastal communities, while Cayo Santa María itself has developed mainly around tourism and conservation. Traditional Cuban culture is more apparent in nearby mainland towns and villages, where music, food, crafts, and agricultural traditions remain part of daily life. The island’s natural environment is protected through conservation measures covering beaches, wetlands, mangroves, and marine habitats. Its position within the Jardines del Rey island group also places it within a broader cultural and geographic landscape shaped by Cuba’s relationship with the northern archipelagos and the Caribbean Sea.

Cayo Santa María has several beaches along its northern coast, including Playa La Estrella, Playa Las Caletas, Playa Cañón, and Playa Perla Blanca. The surrounding waters contain coral reefs and shallow marine habitats suited to snorkeling, diving, kayaking, and boat excursions. Inland areas include mangrove wetlands and lagoons that provide habitat for birds and other wildlife. The nearby Buenavista Bay is part of a larger protected coastal ecosystem recognized for its wetlands and marine biodiversity. Visitors can also travel across the causeway to explore Remedios, one of the oldest settlements in Cuba, with its colonial streets and traditional cultural festivals.

Food on Cayo Santa María is centered largely on Cuban and Caribbean ingredients, with seafood, rice, beans, tropical fruit, pork, chicken, and plantains commonly appearing on menus. Nearby mainland communities provide a broader taste of regional Cuban cooking, including dishes such as ropa vieja, congrí, yucca with garlic sauce, and fresh fish. The island is particularly notable for its position within the Jardines del Rey archipelago, where beaches and marine habitats are closely connected to extensive wetlands and mangrove systems. The combination of resort development and protected coastal environments makes Cayo Santa María a distinctive example of Cuba’s northern island landscape.
