Puebla is a state in east-central Mexico, stretching from the high volcanic plateau near Mexico City into the mountains and warmer valleys toward Veracruz and Oaxaca. Its capital is Puebla de Zaragoza, but the state extends far beyond the metropolitan area into distinct regions such as the Sierra Norte and the Tehuacán Valley.

Puebla’s cultural identity has deep Indigenous roots, particularly among Nahua, Totonac, Mixtec, Otomí, and Popoloca communities. Talavera pottery is especially associated with Puebla and is recognized by UNESCO as an element of intangible cultural heritage shared with Tlaxcala and communities in Spain. Cholula is an important center of Indigenous and colonial heritage, while towns in the Sierra Norte preserve distinctive architectural and agricultural traditions. Local festivals often combine Catholic observances with customs rooted in Indigenous community life.

The state contains landscapes ranging from pine-covered mountains to cactus-filled desert valleys. The Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Valley, extending into neighboring Oaxaca, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site noted for exceptional biodiversity and dense forests of columnar cacti. Archaeological evidence there also documents early plant domestication and sophisticated systems for managing water. Elsewhere, the Sierra Norte contains misty mountain landscapes, waterfalls, caves, and coffee-growing areas around communities such as Cuetzalan and Xicotepec. The Great Pyramid of Cholula, with the Church of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios above it, is among Puebla’s most recognizable cultural landmarks.
